It's all about lights! and Lightroom 3 tutorials...

Good evening,

I was looking for some Lightroom tutorials and I came across this very well done and nice video about lighting:

It's All About The Light!

Amazing demonstration by Terry White of what you can accomplish with just a decent camera but with good lighting. Very much recommended.

Continuing with Terry, here it is a very interesting tutorial about virtual copies in Lightroom, which I did not know and just learned thanks to him. I just got Lightroom 3 and I am starting to play and discover it myself.

Take Advantage of Virtual Copies in Lightroom 3

Another neat tutorial about editing a RAW file can be found here:

To summarize, here you have 4 links to these four channels of these 5 editing gurus (yes, JaredPolin's channel also includes Greg Cazillo's tutorials):

Choosing Lights

Good morning guys!

Hey, I just found this video in youtube that explains the different types of lights for a video production. I am researching myself since a set of lights is the last piece I need to start shooting my first short movie next spring.

I kind of like the temperature of tungsten lights, but the heat and power inconvenience is leading me towards LED lights instead. But again, I am undecided and still researching.

Enjoy:

3K43K... 3k for 3k? RED Scarlet...

As I was researching about the DSLR 'film' world, I came across this great podcast (indiemoviecast.com) talking about the RED Scarlet. I started my small collection of glass (lenses) and since they become an investment for the future, I keep my eye open for the 'next' body. Originally interested on a full frame camera, I decided to wait and hope for the next Canon 5D (Mark III?). RED cameras are the indie filmmaker dream, but at a cost most of us CANNOT pay. We have been waiting for about two years of rumors on the RED Scarlet. It seems it never comes out. But it will. Well, we all hope. But it seems like a real dream. I've heard they are waiting to release it 'right'. No rushing (as they seem they've done with the RED One), so they can provide us with the very best. 3K HD files at 120 frames per second for under 3 thousand dollars? Well, I do not know; this is only my personal speculation and hope. I will also love to use my Canon lenses as well. That will be really great. No idea how big the sensor will be. I am quite happy with the 'film' coolness of the Canon 7D even though the sound sucks with the AGC (Audio Gain Control) and seems it will not be fixable because the firmware with the fix seems (at least at the moment I am writing this) not possible.

Hey, when the next 5D and the Scarlet are out; if they do at a similar time frame... it COULD be a tough choice... or not. It will all depend on the actual specs and most of all for us indie filmmakers... the price.

Merry Christmas!! (If I don't write you before then)

Why is better to convert your DSLR footage into ProRes

Friends,

Why is better to convert your DSLR footage into ProRes for a better Final Cut Pro workflow? Well, I found this tutorial when I was researching about Magic Bullet Grinder, and at minute 4:17 and on, you can see a demonstration of why it is very convenient to convert your native H.264 DSLR (Canon 5D MKii, Canon 7D, etc) footage into ProRes for a considerable better editing experience in Final Cut Pro.

Check it out at:

'Film' look for your Movie with Magic Bullet Mojo

Friends,

Yes, let me just say I am not associated with this company at all. This is just part of my research and I came across this plug in (for all major editing hosts) called 'Magic Bullet Mojo' that gives your this 'film' look we all are looking for (well, at least most Indie filmmakers like me).
I did not try it, but I will most likely purchase it sometime next year and give it a shot. It is 99 bucks or 29 if you are upgrading from a previous version.
I am impressed by what I saw on these videos:

Filmmaking Techniques

Hey there,

I found a very instructional video that shows the most popular shots, angles, framing, movement, focus, white balance, composition, lighting and other experiments, as well as editing effects including animation, blue/green screen, keying, colour adjusting, cloning, slow-motion, image effects, transitions and sound editing.

Very well done by young filmmakers from Darwin High School.

Cinematography with Philip Bloom on a Canon 7D and 5D Mark II

Philip Bloom is an U.K. based D.P., Director and Filmmaker/Cinematographer that became an expert on making movies and video products with both the 7D and 5D Mark II. I did some research on him and his work and found this really cool videos and article:

Very cool work, and he is probably the most famous 7D-5D Mark II Filmmaker in the world right now. It is very interesting and cool all you can learn from his 20+ years of experience in the industry. He worked for many well known companies around the world. Check his website out to find out more about him and his work. I specially recommend you guys the second video I posted above. It is on how to set up your Canon DSLR for filming. Super cool, quick and very important core knowledge.

Understanding Local length, Lens categories, Crop factor, How to Blur background, How to take Portraits and More!..

Friends,

I have found a very nice video tutorial and finally understood some new concepts I did not get before. Specially that what a 'full frame' sensor is and that a 1.6 sensor (crop depends on the sensor's size) is like the Canon 7D's. So, the crop factor on a full frame sensor (like the Canon 5D Mark II for example) equals to 1 and 1.6 for the 7D.

Check it out, it is called:
